Fifty years ago, the world was on the brink of a technological revolution.
Mobile networks were in their infancy, the first microcomputers were entering the UK market, and smartwatches were still a futuristic concept.
It was against this backdrop of innovation that Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) established itself in the UK, becoming the heartbeat of the nation’s unfolding digital transformation.
In half a century, the world has progressed from the early days of computing to artificial intelligence (AI), cloud, and quantum–what comes next will no doubt impact us all.
In running and sports, technology is increasingly pushing the limits of human potential. From using data and AI to elevate training insights, to making the race experience more accessible for millions of fans and spectators, innovation has been at the heart of TCS’ long-term partnership with London Marathon Events.
The game-changing TCS London Marathon app is just one example of innovation.
The app has been developed with insights from TCS’ 50 years of working in close partnerships with iconic UK brands.
This breakthrough technology has transformed how runners and supporters connect during the TCS London Marathon, ensuring that every milestone and part of the emotional journey can be shared with loved ones. The 2024 edition launched the Way Finder feature that estimated your arrival time at key landmarks, making sure spectators could be ready to cheer you on in key moments. Nearly 700,000 people downloaded and enjoyed the app in 2024, making it the number one ranked app in the iOS store sports category.
Just as runners train for months to take part in the marathon, we are continuously developing the app–stay tuned for more information on this year’s improved features.
Whilst the last 50 years have been transformative, it has led to this exciting moment we all find ourselves in.
It’s a moment where technology meets human potential in new and groundbreaking ways and the future of the way we live our lives could change.
Through the power of AI, data, and digital twin technology, our Future Athlete Project is revolutionizing how athletes train, providing real-time feedback on their progress, empowering individuals with data analysis and insights far beyond what a commercially available wearable can provide. A digital version of a runner’s body can be continuously fed with data about exercise routines and body functions and then combined with AI to provide extraordinary health insights. This pioneering project has the potential to optimize the human experience, promising a future where we can better monitor and manage our own health, leading to longer, healthier lives.
The work we’re doing to innovate for the future is only possible through extraordinary people who continue to inspire future generations of runners and innovators.
That is why we continue to recognize the role of educators across our communities through the Team TCS Teachers programme. Ryan Thomas, a teacher at Beck Row Primary Academy, took up the Marathon challenge through Team TCS Teachers in 2024 after being told he would never have the lung capacity to run a marathon following a lung operation years prior.
Remarkable teachers like Ryan play a vital role in shaping young lives. In 2024, teachers helped to inspire over 12,900 school children to run the TCS Mini London Marathon.
For 5 decades, TCS has been a driving force behind the UK’s digital evolution.
TCS has empowered businesses and communities in the UK with cutting-edge technology.
As we look at the road ahead, we are excited by the potential of what’s to come and know that strong partnerships are the best way to make the most of it.
Like every runner who takes part in the TCS London Marathon, we know that progress comes from a vision for what’s ahead. We will continue pushing the boundaries for the next 50 years,
Running transforms people. We transform businesses. Learn more about how TCS is driving innovation across industries in the UK.
