Highlights
TCS and Nationwide have embarked on a journey of collaborative innovation.
Nationwide Building Society, the world’s largest building society with over 17 million customers, is committed to delivering banking but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society. Nationwide aims to strengthen its relationship with customers by offering a wide range of financial services and products and giving value back to them through better pricing and better service. To help realise this ambition, Nationwide has sought to harness cutting-edge innovations by collaborating with its trusted partners.
Nationwide collaborates with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to realise its goals. This decade-long partnership covers various business areas, including payments, mortgages, security, and digital marketing. Both organisations have recently embarked on joint innovation, enhancing the flow of ideas and adopting emerging digital technologies to shape the future of banking.
Leveraging its TCS PaceTM ecosystem, academic alliances, and fintech network, TCS is helping Nationwide realise its vision.
To support Nationwide’s innovation goals, TCS appointed a dedicated innovation specialist to lead key initiatives, further strengthened by the expertise of TCS’ industry advisory groups and global consulting practices. The collaboration has been accelerated through a range of innovation-focused events, workshops, and experiments, leveraging TCS’ state-of-the-art innovation hub in London – the TCS Pace Port – and academic and fintech networks.
Central to this partnership has been the refinement of Nationwide’s innovation playbook. Through a series of thought leadership workshops, TCS has helped sharpen Nationwide’s ability to identify key problem statements and manage a portfolio of ideas. Moreover, TCS has sparked a cultural shift within the organisation, with more than 250 employees who have participated in ideathons, training sessions, and innovation days, resulting in a range of initiatives that Nationwide is taking forward.
The collaboration between TCS and Nationwide has driven meaningful initiatives, addressing key sustainability and accessibility challenges.
In 2023, Nationwide actively participated in the TCS Sustainathon programme, a platform designed to tackle real-world sustainability challenges faced by businesses. Over the course of 10 weeks, university students from across the UK and Ireland developed innovative concepts to problem statements posed by participating organisations. Nationwide’s challenge focused on measuring and tracking the embodied carbon within its extensive IT estate, aiming to enable more informed sustainability decisions and reduce the environmental impact of electronic waste. Fresh perspectives from students resulted in a compelling concept that reimagined how such challenges could be addressed.
Another standout initiative in 2024 was the collaboration with Nationwide’s Vulnerable Customers Programme. TCS facilitated cross-functional engagement by connecting Nationwide teams with TCS accessibility experts, sparking the development of innovative tools for their contact centre colleagues. These tools aim to help frontline staff effectively identify and manage complex cases involving vulnerable customers, reinforcing Nationwide’s commitment to accessibility and customer care.
Backed by a robust pipeline of innovation initiatives, some of which are already underway, the NBS-TCS partnership is set to achieve even greater milestones.
These include the comprehensive mapping of end-to-end processes in retail banking to identify pain points and generate high-impact solutions, design thinking training sessions to foster creative problem-solving, and thought leadership events showcasing cutting-edge innovation and technology. Together, these efforts aim to enhance Nationwide’s competitiveness and drive sustainable growth.
This partnership stands as a testament to the power of collaboration in driving transformative innovation. With a shared vision for the future, Nationwide and TCS are set to develop pioneering solutions that will shape the banking industry for years to come.
