A global innovation contest
It takes many new ideas to solve the problems that societies and communities the world over face–be it food, poverty, water conservation, or healthcare and safety.
It was with this in mind that 40,000 students from around the world were involved in creating technology-led solutions, aligned with all 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as an answer to some of the planet’s most pressing problems. These young students, aged between 10-16 years, were participants in a global competition organized by TCS as part of its flagship digital innovation and career readiness program, Go Innovate Together (goIT).
Concepts that advanced to the final round included: an emergency alert mobile app to ensure safety and provide safe passage to young women in dangerous areas; a mobile app to help coffee farmers earn a fair rate for their coffee beans by eliminating middlemen in distribution; and a mobile app that allows students and schools to recycle used school supplies and offer them to under-resourced schools or under-privileged members in the community.
In a virtual event held on April 28, 2023, a panel judged Laura Farry, a student from Ireland, as the 2022 TCS goIT Innovator of the Year. Three students from Australia and India were given honorable mentions for their pioneering efforts in innovation.
For the 2022 Global Innovator of the Year competition, Ireland’s Laura Farry developed an app that provides services to refugees from Ukraine. Australia’s Ethan Ajeesh and Gurmaan Singh focused on alleviating food insecurity, while India’s Rounak Khatri worked on an innovation to help users and communities understand and adopt sustainable practices.
The global innovation competition was spread across 12 months and carried out across all TCS geographies—Europe, Asia Pacific, the Americas, Middle East and Africa, India, and Australia and New Zealand. Each of these regions identified more than 10,000 innovations, which were then pared down to a final list of 27. There were a total of 76 student finalists.
To prepare for the global scale of the competition, each of the 27 teams was mentored by TCS associates, who provided coaching, advice, and feedback to help students hone their digital innovations and entrepreneurial pitches.
Go Innovate Together (goIT)!
The Global Innovator of the Year award is an annual culmination of TCS’ endeavor to further innovation as a culture in young minds. The competition is an important part of goIT, which equips students with the skills and confidence to develop a mindset to pursue careers of the future.
Through design workshops and custom mentorship experiences, goIT impacts students around the world, as it inspires them to pursue careers in STEM and to think of how digital technologies can help build a more sustainable world.
Students across the globe worked to create solutions aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) addressing some of the world’s most pressing problems. A color-coded graphic shows an overview of the 17 SDGs. This is followed by a list of global finalists segregated by their geography, UN SDG, name of the innovation, city, and student’s name in the subsequent images.
There were four entries from Australia and New Zealand. The first one by Kushagra Mani Tripathi from Sydney is called ‘Shelter Finder’ and targeted the UN SDG on no poverty. The second one, ‘Waterverse,’ by Neev Chhokkar, Lucas Huynh, Zeke Rabuya, and Aron Tyrone-Dumesic, targets the SDG focused on saving underwater life. The third one, by Ethan Ajeesh and Gurmaan Singh from Melbourne, is called ‘Food Support’ and targets the goal of zero hunger. The fourth one, called ‘Eco Energy’ by Tilly Gaut, Martha Degner, Addison Howard, and Daisy Dunbar from Port Macquarie, targets affordable clean energy. There were also two entries from the Asia Pacific region. The first one is called ‘Tabang’ and is by Adonis Besa, Devin Acurantes, John Fernando, Raymond Saenz, Vina Jocsing, and Ysha Alejaga from Roxas City in the Philippines. It targeted the goal of good health and well-being. The second, ‘Sights’ by Astrid Jireh P.Magallanes, Carlos Jose D Rivera, Rowen Jusher Tupaz, Marykristel Kate B. Lascuña, Ann Denisado, and Rosa Mia N. Diestro tried to solve the goal of reduced inequalities.
There were three finalists from Europe. The ‘Friend Seeker’ innovation by Hayat and team from Mechelen took on the goal of good health and wellbeing. The other two entries targeted the UN’s goal of reduced inequalities. These were ‘School Route’ by Amran Kaoutar and team from Belgium and ‘EqualLife’ by Aya Amchaar, Rafael Delgado, Nicol Morales, Tiffany Valencia, and Diana Barrientos from Madrid, Spain. There were four entries from India. ‘0 Stress’ by Nisha Kawad, Monita Solanki, Kashish Sargara, Shikha Trivedi and Palak Bangad from Pune targeted good health and well-being. ‘Save Blue, Live Green’ by Niharika Shivaramu from Bangalore targets the goal of clean water and sanitation. ‘Go Green’ by Raunak Khatri from Indore targets climate action and ‘Farming Waste Management’ by Kushal Karche from Pune targets sustainable cities and communities. There were three entries from Latin America, all from Quito in Ecuador. Two of them, ‘InfoEducation’ by Jose Miguel Rosas and ‘Sociolar’ by Estefania Garcia, focused on reducing inequalities. The third one, ‘Equi’ by Llanaheli Zuna, targeted gender equality.
There were five finalists from the Middle East and Africa. Two of them focused on the UN goal of zero hunger. These are ‘Free Market’ by Leila Krayani, Malak Mohamed Abdelnasser and Lana Naghi from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and ‘HTH’ by Mikhael Bayman and Sameer Bailey from Cape Town in South Africa. There was one focused on climate action called ‘Team Earth’ by Larisa Nidal Shabaan, Lamar Ahmed Yousef Hasson, and Cyrine Farid AlDahouk. ‘We Help’, by Ghina Mohammad, Moufed AL Refae, Sara Nedal Saleem Abuahmada, and Zaineh Maher Burhan Aldinn Abdullah chose the goal of reducing inequalities. Another innovation, ‘Job Drop,’ by Alutha Shongweni, Baphelele Sijila, Inganathi Kwahlukwahlu, Jodien Davids, Kuhle Javy, Muneebah Davids, and Sohail Abrahams aimed at the SDG goal of decent work and economic growth. Three innovations came from North America. ‘A Second Life’, by Aishani Bal from Cumming, USA, focused on responsible consumption and production. ‘GoTo’, by Caroline Chan Tiffany Ngo, Aryanna Gangani, and Edlyn To Laura Faja from Toronto, Canada, targeted the SDG goal of sustainable cities and communities. ‘A Cleaner Earth’, by Alaina Gupta from San Jose, USA, focused on reduced inequalities. ‘Nurture’ by Tyrambakeshwar Vinayakaraman from Rugby was the only entry that made it to the finals from the UK and targeted the UN SDG focused on life on land. There were two finalists from Ireland and both focused on industry, innovation, and infrastructure. One was ‘Coffair’ by Darragh Davidson, Dylan Doherty, Louie Mort Cianan McDaid, and Eoghan O’Hagan from Dunglow; the other was ‘Educate Ukraine’ by Laura Farry from Stranorlar.
