Tata Consultancy Services Launches Student Bursary in Partnership with Queen Mary University of London
LONDON | MUMBAI, July 31, 2020: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS) a leading global IT services, consulting and business solutions organization, is partnering with Queen Mary University of London to offer a bursary for students looking to study computer science.
The TCS Digital Explorers Bursary will provide financial assistance to up to 20 undergraduate students from low income families. At least 50 percent of the recipients will be women, to help address the underrepresentation of women in the digital and IT sector in the UK.
This initiative is part of TCS’ ongoing investment in STEM education and the IT leaders of the future. Its award-winning Digital Explorers outreach programme operates in schools and colleges across the country, aiming to inspire young people to consider career opportunities in the digital and IT industry.
The STEM skills gap in the UK market has long been known. There is an estimated shortfall of 173,000 STEM workers, with an average of 10 unfilled positions per business, resulting in an annual loss of £1.5 Bn due to recruitment, temporary staffing, training and inflated salaries.1
The TCS Digital Explorers bursary will be offered to students starting this academic year in September/October and applications open in September.
Amit Kapur, Country Head, TCS UK & Ireland, said, “For the last many years, TCS has been working with schools and colleges to get young people cited about STEM education and careers, as a means of attracting talent to these sectors in the UK. We are extremely proud of our new TCS Digital Explorers bursary as a further investment into the future leaders of our industry.”
Professor Simon Lucas, Head of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Queen Mary University of London, said, “As a leading university in the UK we believe strongly in the power of higher education in paving the way for the leaders of the future; the TCS bursary provides an opportunity to those who otherwise may not be able to pursue an undergraduate degree.
The bursary builds on our successful partnership with TCS that has developed over the last two years. In that time, TCS has helped us with supporting apprenticeship learners, building business board representation and providing guest speakers.”
