Mumbai, India, July 27, 2008: Tata Consultancy Services, (TCS) the leading IT services, business solutions and outsourcing firm, has been engaged by the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR), on behalf of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, to undertake a comprehensive marine geophysical data acquisition program for the Antarctic region. This is a part of a national project to help understand the marine ecosystem and provide various scientific community data to understand global changes in weather and environment better.
TCS will use its expertise in making available the outputs of scientific models through web interfaces and enable scientific organizations to retrieve the data for interpretation and developing modules pertaining to their field of expertise. This model is replicable for all countries having marine Geo-Physical Databases. Marine Geo is now being seen by countries to increase their food production sources.
Rasik Ravindra, Director, NCAOR welcomed the association of TCS with this project of national significance. “This data is acquired through strenuous efforts by various scientific communities all over India. It is crucial to treasure this and to create an interface for researchers. I am sure TCS with its huge expertise and specially coming back from an experience of Tsunami Early Warning System for Ministry of Earth Sciences is the right partner for doing this work.”
Tanmoy Chakrabarty, Vice President and Head, Government Industry Solutions Unit said “TCS is confident that our domain expertise and technology support will accelerate the success of the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research and provide valuable data to the scientific community in India.”

NCAOR also manages the Oceanic Research Vessel (ORV) Sagar Kanya – a multidisciplinary Oceanographic Research Vessel dedicated to the survey and exploration of high seas for multi-agency oceanographic studies in Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. NCAOR is also on its way to establishing a National Antarctic Data Centre and a Polar Museum, first of their kind in the country. For more details visit http://www.ncaor.gov.in.
