Responsible AI is a necessary step on the journey to achieving business-wide AI value
Over the past three decades at TCS, I’ve been fortunate to witness and participate in numerous transformative trends, from the era of mainframes to the advent of digital, cloud computing, and most recently, artificial intelligence. Each trend has enabled us to explore new capabilities, build innovative businesses, and harness emerging trends and technologies to drive meaningful transformations.
Throughout my journey I’ve had the privilege of building on past successes, but also of letting go and restarting from scratch. The process of recalibration has taught me that genuine technology revolutions require willingness to relearn and challenge your assumptions about the way the market works. Recalibration has helped me see the unique challenges organizations face as they seek to adopt AI and demonstrate the value from AI today.
Unlike previous waves of transformation, the pre-eminent challenge that needs to be solved before realizing the value of AI is to ensure that AI outputs meet TCS Responsible AI SAFTI tenets©—secure, accountable, fair, transparent, and identity protecting. If we in the industry ecosystem do not come together to embrace Responsible AI, the path to fully realized AI value will be near impossible as AI will not be able to scale for businesses and society as a whole.
This is an idea the market agrees with—the TCS AI for Business Study showed that 95% of senior industry leaders feel the need for ethical AI frameworks that guide the responsible use of AI.
However, while many acknowledge the importance of Responsible AI, the reality is that implementations lag behind due to obvious challenges in a non-standard technology and evolving regulatory landscape. Over the past year, we’ve seen customers take their first step with AI, with a significant increase in proof of concepts and pilot projects. The focus has been on proving potential from both technology and value perspectives. For the most part, the initial focus has not been on embracing guardrails—but as the businesses move from PoCs to scaled production, they are recognizing the imperative of Responsible AI.
Responsible AI is a crucial step in unlocking business-wide AI value. It involves a deep focus on specific job personas to enable human-centered, ethical productivity, before rolling out more widely in an organization.
Having largely proven its potential to assist and augment human workers, AI is rapidly advancing towards the next stage: transformation. AI-driven transformation enables businesses to reimagine their value chains, fully leverage the power of new technologies, and become perpetually adaptive and innovative in developing new business process models and opportunities. In this environment, AI will be increasingly empowered to act on its own—a capability that cannot and should not be achieved until Responsible AI is engrained in the fabric of the organization.
TCS’ Responsible AI Commitment with Amazon Web Services
At AWS re:Invent this week, we are reaffirming our commitment to Responsible AI by launching a comprehensive platform covering the entire AI lifecycle from data preparation to model deployment and monitoring in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). The platform provides mutual customers with access to advanced techniques like fairness metrics to mitigate bias and ensure ethical outcomes.
These capabilities are crucial for businesses, not only to address upcoming and evolving AI regulations, but also to ensure sustainable value creation and the scalability of AI applications across business and society.
TCS is working with partners like AWS to operationalize Responsible AI. Whereas in the past this was difficult for organizations due to shifting governance, measurement, and management models, TCS and AWS have built a structured implementation framework to contextualize Responsible AI principles into actionable guidelines and policies that can evolve organically over time.

This framework provides comprehensive lifecycle coverage by identifying Responsible AI tenets for a given scenario and connecting the tenets to mechanisms that test the developed models comprehensively and monitor them in real-time after deployment.
Guided by the TCS Responsible AI SAFTI tenets ©, the framework helps identify gaps across people, process, and technology aspects of AI, while also aiding developers to infuse Responsible AI guardrails across the entire AI lifecycle. Critically, this includes mechanisms to test and monitor defined metrics. The framework enables TCS and AWS customers to develop and deploy AI applications with Responsible AI baked in by using the following process:
