Mumbai, May 21, 2013: The Tata group, today, hosted His Excellency Li Keqiang, the Honorable Premier of the People’s Republic of China, at Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) global software development center in Mumbai, during the Premier’s short visit to the city.
Cyrus P Mistry, Chairman of the Tata group, welcomed His Excellency Li Keqiang and his delegation of ministers and other officials at the world-class facility. Mistry was accompanied by N Chandrasekaran, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, TCS, and other senior Tata group officials. During the visit, the Premier was given an overview of the Tata group’s operations in China with a special focus on Jaguar Land Rover’s and TCS’ growing investments and operations across the country.
His Excellency Li Keqiang engaged closely with senior Tata group officials on matters of mutual interest. The Premier saw exhibits of the latest Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar XF models. He was given an overview of the software industry and also spent time interacting with TCS and Tata group employees in China from the Shanghai Global Development Center through a live video conference. The Premier was given a tour of the TCS Software Delivery Center.
The Tata group was the only Indian private enterprise on the itinerary of the Premier during his three-day visit to India, underscoring the importance of the group’s operations and investments in China.
Welcoming His Excellency Li Keqiang, Mistry said, “We are delighted with the visit of the Premier to our group and this facility. China is a very important geography for the future growth of the Tata group and we continue to increase our investments and scale of operations in that country.” While TCS was the first Indian software company to set up operations in China and has grown significantly, there, we have made substantial investments in many sectors across China. We believe that there can be tremendous cross-learning between India and China in the field of technology.”
Jaguar Land Rover formed a joint venture agreement with China’s Chery Automobile in November 2012. The total investment in the joint venture is RMB 10.9 billion, which includes a manufacturing plant in Changshu. This will become Jaguar Land Rover’s first all-new manufacturing facility outside of the UK. During 2012, China became Jaguar Land Rover’s largest global market and the country continues to be at the centre of its global strategy. In addition to providing great new products, over the past three years, Jaguar Land Rover has been investing in sales and after-sales infrastructure to develop an extensive dealer network in China with 163 authorized dealers.
TCS was the first Indian IT company to start operations in China in 2002. In 2005, TCS was invited by the Chinese Government to form a Joint Venture (JV) supported by the National Development and Reforms Commission (NDRC) to create a large scale global off-shoring base in China. TCS is operating out of six locations in China - Beijing, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Tianjin and Dalian. Apart from servicing the needs of its global clients which have expanded operations in China and the rest of south Asia, TCS China meets the huge domestic geography’s demand for IT solutions and supports neighboring markets. Today, TCS China has capabilities in providing services in nine different languages including English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Indonesian, Bahasa and Vietnamese. Currently, TCS has achieved a leadership position in the banking application software market in China. TCS BaNCS core banking system is already being used by 14 banks in China including Special Administrative Region (SAR) Hongkong and Taiwan. TCS was also conferred on multiple occasions APAC and China “Best Core Banking System Project Award” by The Asian Banker.
Provincial administrations and industry bodies in China have also appreciated the developmental work undertaken by TCS. These have resulted in TCS being given the 2013 “Outstanding Contribution to China Smart City” Award by China Smarter City Forum, the “2012 Top 10 Global Service Provider in China” by the China Council for International Investment Promotion (CCIIP), and the 2012 “100 Best HRM Companies in China” Award by 51Job.
