TCS offers vision to enhance quality STEM education and implores action and accountability from private and public stakeholders alike
AUSTIN, TX, June 20, 2013: Tata Consultancy Services (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS), the leading IT services, consulting and business solutions organization, today, announced that its President of its North America, UK and Europe operations, Surya (Sury) Kant delivered the keynote address at the US News STEM Solutions Conference in Austin, Texas, setting the stage for the CEO Roundtable on “What Big Employers Want.” Addressing the national audience, Sury provided TCS’ unique perspective on both the challenges facing the science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) education in the country and offered solutions to how stakeholders from across the private and public spectrum can come together to tackle these challenges.
More than 2,000 leaders and visionaries in business, education, and government from around the United States convened in Austin, Texas, from June 17-19, 2013 at the Austin Convention Center, to advance the agenda for national change in STEM education, policy and workforce development. The National Conference focused on targeted outcomes that create an impact to fill jobs now and advance the future of the STEM workforce. As part of its commitment to support STEM education and technology inclusion, TCS is also proud to be the presenting sponsor of the US News STEM Solutions Conference.
In his keynote remarks entitled, “STEM Talent & Workforce: Views from a Global IT Leader,” Sury remarked that while American students’ proficiencies in STEM subjects have reached an all-time low, companies can take an active role in reversing the trend by using their expertise and resources to 1) increase student capability, 2) build the capacity for better STEM education giving teachers the resources to inspire their students and drive higher enrollment in STEM subjects, 3) enhance the quality of STEM education, and 4) improve the employability of graduates for STEM-related industries.
“The fundamental challenge we face today, is that demand for talent in STEM industries is much higher than what the education system is supplying, and the supply pipeline is not geared up to produce the needs of the new ‘digital’ economy,” said Sury. “As employers in corporate America, we need to use our organizational resources, our core competencies, and the skills and passion of our employees to implement the solution. And we should hold ourselves accountable to the goals and outcomes we set for ourselves to achieve.”
Another highlight of the conference was the unveiling of STEMconnector’s “100 CEO Leaders in STEM” list which showcased TCS’ CEO and MD, N Chandrasekaran (Chandra). The unprecedented publication presents 100 corporate CEO profiles including their thought-provoking views on the future of our national competitiveness and the need for a STEM workforce. The CEO’s center their discussions around technology; innovation; skills to careers; public-private partnerships; women, girls and diversity; global competitiveness; scalability; and best practices.
“Future job growth will be in STEM disciplines, and a nation aspiring to be a global leader can use STEM education as a perfect platform for economic growth and prosperity,” said Chandra. “I am enormously proud of the work TCS has done and continues to do to raise the quality of STEM education in communities across the nation.”
This week’s conference participation is just the latest in TCS’ ongoing efforts to improve STEM education. Last week at CGI America, a nationwide gathering hosted by the Clinton Global Initiative in Chicago, Illinois, it was announced that TCS has joined US2020 as a Founding Leadership Partner. US2020 is a national STEM education initiative that aims to engage one million STEM professionals in mentorship opportunities by the year 2020. TCS will be the lead partner in developing US2020’s web-based matching technology that will help place STEM volunteers into high-impact mentoring opportunities with top nonprofits working across different grades, settings and delivery models. Last week, TCS also kicked off the latest year of its own STEM mentoring initiative – the TCS goIT Student Technology Program - a multi-tiered outreach program engaging students, parents, universities and local government, with the goal of increasing student excitement and participation in technology-related careers. Since goIT’s launch in 2009, the program has evolved from a two-school camp to a national, year-long program that has influenced over 7,000 students across 35 school districts and this year will reach schools and students across 10 cities in the US as well as Toronto, Canada
