Skills of 2,000 workers to be upgraded during construction phase
Kolkata, December 20, 2012: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS), a leading IT services, consulting and business solutions firm, announced that it has devised an innovative scheme to further boost pool of skilled workers in construction and related industries like metalwork across the country.
This unique program to upgrade skills will be carried out during the construction phase while building new TCS campuses in places like Kolkata, Indore and Nagpur. A pilot program for this unique skills development initiative has already commenced at Rajarhat, where TCS is constructing a software development campus spread over 40 acres.
Over the course of the construction period, as many as 2,000 workers will be trained at the purpose-built on-site Construction Skill Training Center (CTSC). The CTSC, which has tie-ups with local training institutes, is functioning since October 2012 and has completed the first batch of worker training certifications.
The trained workers from the CTSC will be employed by building contractors at the site during the construction phase. This skill development program will also enhance awareness toward safety-at-site and increase productivity in the industry.
“Through this process, we expect up to 50% of the workers used in building the TCS campus to be sourced from workers trained at our skills training center,” said S Mahalingam, CFO, TCS. “TCS has always taken the lead in developing IT and engineering talent in India. Now we are looking at how we can help also build the base of other important skills that are important for sustaining economic growth. West Bengal has a significant, scalable pool of people who can contribute to the construction industry nationally as tradesmen.”
Mahalingam added, “I hope that other corporations who are involved with large construction projects will deploy our model to increase the base of trained and skilled workmen in the country. In this manner, we can not only upgrade skills but also increase the employability and earning ability of workers in the construction industry across the country.”
Specific training programs have been designed depending upon the skill level of participants and skills like formwork, bar-bending and masonry will taught in the training center. The CTSC contains live mock-ups of various construction activities. Upon completion, these trainees will be certified based on the skill levels achieved.
Multiple programs have been designed to suit the needs of all workers:
