Gone are the days when running was an individual sport. While athletes still compete on their own, most have family, friends and sponsors following their feats from near and far.
At TCS Lidingöloppet, your supporters can now get even closer to you during the run — courtesy of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the main sponsor and official technology partner.
We use digital technology to solve problems for our business customers. And it’s no different when it comes to our sports sponsorships.
We have created numerous innovations for the global running events TCS sponsors, including the London Marathon, the New York City Marathon, and Lidingöloppet itself.
This year at TCS Lidingöloppet, we are using our tech expertise to power the official event app.
The TCS Lidingöloppet app—available to download free on Google Play and the Apple App Store —aims to provide a unique race experience for runners, their supporters, and spectators.
It can provide all the information you’ll need before and during the race, whether as a runner or a supporter.
The race info and expo info functions will provide users key updates in the lead up to the event.
Before reaching the start line, participants can use the ‘Generate my QR code’ feature to create their unique QR code. This can be scanned at the expo which in turn will allow them to seamlessly collect their bib and event pack.
On race day, the app helps participants and spectators get around, featuring race and transport information, as well as expert tips and advice. An FAQ section is always on hand to answer questions about the event, and an SOS function is available in case of race-day emergencies.
As a runner, you can easily map your progress around the course. You can also share your bib details with supporters, allowing them to track your progress on the app, cheer you on, and view results after the event has finished.
The ‘Get Social’ feature enables users to take selfies, pick a favourite frame, and share their photos straight to their social media channels.
A unique race experience
Of course, TCS’ technology innovations do not end only with the app. We’ve also created new ways for athletes to fulfil their potential.
In recent years, we’ve been at the forefront of Digital Twins technology which enables the creation of a virtual counterpart of something in the physical world.
While this technology is often applied in the world of business, it is also being utilised by athletes.
TCS supported Olympic marathon runner Des Linden by creating a twin of her heart, allowing her to gain valuable insight into how it would perform in different scenarios.
While the technology might not be widely available just yet, we believe innovations like this will help athletes reach new levels of performance in the future.
